Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg International) is one of the most modern airport in Europe, use some of the infrastructure of the existing airport Berlin-Schönefeld ( Flughafen Berlin Schönefeld) in Schönefeld, Germany, located near Berlin. The airport officially came into operation on October 31, 2020.

BER Airport has been ground-breaking since 2006 and according to the original plan, the first opening date was on October 30, 2011, but then it was delayed 5 times in a row. As of 2020, BER takes more than 20 years  from the beginning of 2006 to the time it is put into operation.

Berlin Airport Brandenburg Airport is expected to become the leading modern air transport hub Europe, replacing the old airports that have been overloaded in Berlin for many years. Terminal 1 of the airport, located in the southern suburbs of Berlin.

Schoenefeld Airport

In the Berlin airport system there is a subsidiary international airport named  Schoenefeld. The airport is located 18 km southeast of Berlin. Schoenefeld Airport is smaller than Tegel Airport in the Berlin airport system. It is East Germany’s major civilian airport and the only airport of the former East Berlin.

You can go to Berlin – Schoenefeld airport in many different ways:

By Railway: Schoenefeld Airport is served by the Berlin – Schoenefeld Flughafen railway. These trains run every 30 minutes, and regularly, you can catch the S9 through Berlin Central Station, which runs every 20 minutes.

By car: You can also reach Schoenefeld airport via the nearby motorway system A113 or the A100 motorway leading to central Berlin or the A10 motorway around Berlin.

– By bus: The airport is also well connected to public transport, with six local bus routes. However, getting to the city center by S-Bahn will be quicker and easier.

  • With bus line S9, you get to the airport from Zoologischer Garten in 50 minutes, from Friedrichstraße it takes about 40 minutes. Line S9 also passes through other major train stations in the city center, so you can easily get to the airport without changing trains.

  • The S45 takes you to the Treptower park, where you can change to the Ringbahn, where you’re also well connected.

Another possibility is that the train is in the area, which also runs to the vicinity of Berlin. Schoenefeld Airport can be reached by regional train 14 from Alexanderplatz in 27 minutes. The zone 22 train takes you comfortably to Charlottenburg and the zone 7 train even to Potsdam.

If you decide to go to or from the airport using public transport, keep in mind that you will also have to purchase a ticket for your luggage. A single ticket for area AB is enough to get to Tegel. Schoenefeld is already in the C range, so you need an ABC ticket. Discounted tickets can be applied to children aged 14 and under.

If you just need to change trains in Berlin and go to another airport, you should plan to travel at least an hour by public transport. Travel time by car takes about 25 minutes.

Schönefeld Airport was merged into the new BER airport after Berlin Brandenburg Airport officially went into operation on October 31, 2020.

Tegel Airport – The symbol of a time of Berlin

Location

Tegel Airport is Germany’s main international airport, located in the city of Berlin, less than 20 minutes by car from the city center. Previously, Tegel Airport was known to serve the western part of Berlin, the number of passengers at this airport is quite large and is known as Germany’s fourth busiest airport.

Tegel Airport is the hub for Eurowings, as well as the headquarters of Easyjet. Tegel Airport – the symbol of the German capital once – will officially close on November 8, 2020 to make way for the new airport, Berlin-Branenburg.

After decommissioning, the Tegel airport area will be developed into a scientific and technological research complex, it is planned that this area will provide jobs for about 18,000 people.

How to get to Tegel Airport

You can access Tegel Airport directly via the A111 motorway, which connects to the A10, A110 and A115 motorways. You can also move into Tegel airport by taxi easily.

In addition, you can also move to Tegel airport by public transport such as bus. The bus routes to Tegel airport are very punctual and frequent, there are currently four different routes to the airport.

  • The TXL bus runs through Beusselstraße S-Bahn (detour) and Berlin Central Station to Robert-Koch-Platz. This bus will take you to Berlin Central Station in 15 minutes.

  • Bus X9 is an express bus that runs between the zoo and Tegel airport. Total travel time on this route is 16 minutes.

  • Bus route 128 does not take you directly to the city center, but you can change to the U6, U8 or U9 subway lines on the line.

  • Finally bus 109: It will take you through Charlottenburg, where you can change to U7, U1 and U9.

Notes when moving to Berlin airport

– Know a little German:  This will be really necessary and important when you are abroad. Knowing basic German will help you communicate easily and without fear of danger, you will be more confident. However, English should also apply a lot if you do not know German.

– It is recommended to go to Berlin airport at least 3 hours early: This helps you completely prepare for the trip and complete the check-in procedure.

– Book a car at least 1 day in advance if not taking public transport. This helps you to be more prepared for your route, not falling into the case of rushing to forget first.

– Make a list of items to bring and prepare in advance. This gives you a lot more peace of mind and comfort when you arrive at Berlin airport and don’t be afraid to forget anything.
