NEW CITIZENSHIP LAW IN GERMANY

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has recently signed into law a new citizenship law, allowing German citizens to acquire additional citizenship and making it easier for foreign citizens to obtain German citizenship.

The minimum residency requirement for obtaining German citizenship has been reduced from 8 years to 5 years, and for well-integrated foreigners, the required time may be as short as 3 years.

Foreign citizens are allowed to retain their existing citizenship when obtaining German citizenship. Previously, the old law required the renunciation of citizenship of another country when obtaining German citizenship, except for EU citizens or Swiss citizens. Therefore, starting from the end of June 2024, Vietnamese nationals living in Germany will have the right to hold dual citizenship of Vietnam and Germany.

On March 22, 2024, the President of Germany announced that he had approved the new citizenship law “Gesetz zur Modernisierung des Staatsangehörigkeitsrechts (StARModG)”, allowing Germany to have multiple citizenships and streamlining the requirements for obtaining German citizenship. Thus, around the end of June 2024, this new citizenship law in Germany will officially come into effect.
