How to register for internet in Germany
Before starting life as an international student, one often encounters many challenges in a new environment, new culture, and unfamiliarity with how to use the internet in Germany. Using Vietnamese SIM cards in Germany can be difficult because many cards do not work, and using foreign SIM cards can be costly.
There are several ways to access the internet in Germany while studying abroad. Here is some essential information to help you use the internet efficiently and cost-effectively.
How to connect to the internet in Germany:
You can subscribe to mobile internet packages using a phone SIM card or a mobile modem. Whether it’s a prepaid or a fixed package, the connection quality is generally reliable for your usage.
Additionally, you can also use the internet in public places. Most universities provide free internet access for students. After completing the registration process, you will receive a personal login account. In some universities, you may be required to change the password for your personal internet access at the computer lab. Using the internet at cafes is also a viable option. While there is a fee, it is not expensive.
How to set up internet in Germany:
You will need a fixed telephone line. Research the pricing beforehand before making a purchase. There are many price comparison websites available to help you find the best rates on the market.
In general, the steps to set up internet in Germany are similar. First, you need to choose a suitable internet service provider and register on their website. After signing the contract, you will receive a confirmation and be provided with a modem. Then, a technician will come to install the internet for you. Make sure to provide the correct address in the contract and allocate at least 2 hours for the technician’s appointment.
The costs typically include the Wi-Fi router and associated devices, along with installation fees. The total amount you have to pay will depend on the provider. Additionally, you may need to pay a contract fee to formalize the agreement between you and the provider. Therefore, carefully consider the installation costs of each provider before making a decision.
Types of internet connections in Germany:
There are two types of internet connections you can consider: cable internet and DSL internet.
With cable internet, the installation process is quicker, but you need to choose a suitable provider as each provider covers specific areas. In other words, your network connectivity will be limited depending on your location.
DSL internet, on the other hand, takes more time to install but offers more flexibility and a wider coverage area, giving you more options.
Questions to ask the provider before installation:
Before deciding to sign an installation contract, it is advisable to ask the internet service provider about the following:
- Inquire about the terms and conditions of the contract. For example, the duration of the contract and whether it can be canceled at any time. If you decide to terminate the contract and no longer use the network, as a student, can you keep the router or do you have to return it to the provider (keep the receipt if you need to return the router!).
- Inquire about the total installation costs. Also, ask in advance about the costs of different internet packages to compare prices before making a suitable choice. Additionally, the installation package may include some devices that you may deem unnecessary, so request the provider to exclude those. This will help you save some costs!
In general, if you want to use the internet in Germany, you need to allocate a portion of your budget and spend some time on registration and installation. However, with a little patience, you can make the most of the internet for studying and work purposes.
